After Liquid- Where to go?
by Joe Bauer on Jul 6, 2008 at 11:20:41 am

Since Avid will not be upgrading liquid, what options do we have regarding evolving HD technology and our NLE. A lot of event videographers moving to HD are talking about 24p, which Liquid doesn't currently support. There are likely to be many other changes coming- I've upgraded my software every 12-18 months since I started editing back in 1996. I have the current version of Premiere (though I haven't used that NLE since I switched to Liquid Pro back in version 5) What are the advantages/ differences/ costs/ options offered by Avid?

The next offering from Avid is Media Composer. I think it may be wise to hold tight and find out what NLE will fully take advantage of 64bit processing. The new technologies like AVHD are processor intensive codecs because of their compression scheme.

Are you in a hurry to change now?

No, actually, I have not yet transitioned to HD and I have a pretty efficient work flow with Liquid. I just don't want to get caught having to move to a whole new interface, with all the challenges that would entail in the middle of a backlog (during wedding season). My wife reminds me of the blue streak that came from me when I switched from Premiere to Liquid. I hope the next transition could/ would be a rather smoother one.

A few things:

1. Liquid does support 24p but not the type that requires pulldown. So true 24p from cameras like the Sony EX1 are supported by Liquid. Liquid also supports the Canon 24F formats (one of the few NLE's that does). It also supports the JVC ProHD formats.

2. There are two upgrade paths if you want to stay in the Avid family. There will be a replacement for Liquid from Pinnacle in about a year that will probably support many of the newer file based cameras and formats. We don't know much about the feature set of this new NLE but Jan Piros of Pinnacle has described it as being aimed squarely at the professional videographer. We will have to see exactly what that means.

Avid is also currently offering a $1000 discount on Media Composer software through this Sepetember for those that want to move to the lastest version of Media Composer. You can contact an Avid authorized dealer for more information. You cannot buy it through the Avid estore, you must go to an authorized dealer.

If Liquid currently serves your needs, I would wait a while longer and see what develops with the new program. There will also be a patch released very soon to address newer video hardware (DX10 cards) for the current version.

Hi Lew,

Have there be any new developments with regards to the upgrades offered from Pinnacle as per what you mentioned in this thread?

Please would you fill me in on the DX10 card? Is this for Vista...what are the benifits please?

Cheers Lew,

Dirk
