Okay, so I'm having trouble playing back a 1080i HDV clip on any of the Blackmagic preset timelines in Premiere Pro CS3.1.1

Take a look at this screenshot:
http://www.photogenixllc.com/hdv%20trouble.html

The above acid trip shows up on the intensity pro as well. Does intensity use the graphics card?

Tech Support checked to make sure I had updated drivers for intensity and for my graphics cards (nvidia 8600gt). Got 'em, had 'em.

Secondly, they were able to duplicate the problem by switching to 'Open GL' in >playback settings >desktop preview acceleration. When they switched back to 'None' the problem was solved. Didn't work for me.

Any clip that I import that requires rendering (red bar on top) displays correctly (different size or framerate). But this HDV is 1080i @ 29.97 and it doesn't need rendering.

Am completely at a loss and can't seem to find anyone else with a similar issue...has anyone seen anything like this before?

Much appreciated...

Hi Grady, my post will not really help you, but maybe you feel better when I tell you that I´ve got exactly the same problems like you. My Computer system is very similar to yours. I tried everything from new codecs, drivers, software etc. Native captured HDMI looks great and runs perfect. As soon as I mix it with HDV or P2, it looks like yours.
I hope that BM support can help me.
Intensity is a good solution for playback at high quality, although a little slow in rendering. Native HDV or P2 outside of BM projekts is much faster. But this might be the price for a great playback. As soon as I found a solution I will post here. Would be great if you do the same.
Cheers from old Germany.

Charlie

What I tested meanwhile:

My current machine runs with XP, uses Intel Quad Core with Asus motherboard P5KPro, 4 GB of ram (Corsair) Geforce 8800 gt and Spin point raid0 3,0 TB (4 x 7500 GB)SATA.
First I thought it could be a problem with CPU or GPU. Therefore I changed Intensity to an older AMD 4.600 Dual Core with Ati 1650 GPU.
Effect: Same problem (see Gradys shot: http://www.photogenixllc.com/hdv and very slow in performance (thats the impressive difference to a Quad Core CPU). CPU and GPU and motherboard cant be the reason
for that problem!

What I found out meanwhile with Intensity back on my newer machine:

As soon as I make an overlay like title on second track the picture is perfect. Even if the title is only a little dot and not visible!
Of course it´s a mass that you´ll get the red line - it must be rendered for fluent playback. Since it is so simple to get an overlay playback -
even with native P2 (mxf files) - it should be easy for Blackmagic to repair the drivers software to run fluently without rendering!
Until now, BMD didn´t answer me - btw. I´ll start another try with this new facts.
Hope to deliver any solution soon - or Blackmagic support does...

Cheers

Charlie

Charlie,

I've noticed this as well...anything that causes the red "render-me" bar causes the playback issue to be fixed...this really makes no sense...HDV playback to an LCD monitor through Intensity Pro is a major selling point for this card!

Thanks Charlie, hopefully we or Blackmagic will get to the bottom of this soon.

Hi Grady and Gavan,

after a long search with many trouble I´m finally happy. Read whole story first:
Soon after my last post I got answer from BM design to use newer or older driver. Elder one didn´t help, but newer one. 1.8.4 showed HDV stuff (this was an effort) but not DVCPRoHD. In this case I should pull programm window to my third screen (Matrox Parhelia) to get a bigger picture! (oh boy, have these people ever worked night and day on video work?) At this point I threw out Intensity Pro and tried again my Cineform Prospect with Parhelia. It worked slow, but I had an overlay on 3. screen.
Next disappointment came with new Quad Core Laptop and Nvidia Quadro GPU: No overlay any more with the new GPU generation because of license trouble (Hollywood). Again I decided not to follow the expensive SDI workflow and was convienced that industrie wants to force us to this expensive solution.
Then I heard from MOTU v3HD (meanwhile v4HD), also for laptop use.
With my first test I got the quality I was looking for! Menwhile I bought a v4HD and use it with PC and Notebook. Firewire 400 ist fast enough, and I´ve got a very good multi role machine for converting to nearly every standard (yes, I know, SDI industrie got me at the end). And now the next surprise, back to my first post:

Before selling the Intensity Pro I made a last test. I used new driver 2.1 and - surprise surprise - it works like we all wanted it should work! (Compliments to BM Design!) Inside BM Projects I mix HDV, P2, m2t, mpeg and get a very good overlay on 3. monitor (HDMI).
Meanwhile I mounted my 8800GT again and am very happy with performance. P2 projects are made with m4HD (also on laptop), HDV and mixed formats are done with BM Intensity.

I hope that my experience will help since I got much help from creative cow myself.

Kind regards

Charlie
