XDCamHD FCP
by Eli Kabillio on Sep 28, 2006 at 10:04:50 pm

Does Blackmagic plan on supporting XDCam? If so, when? We're about ready to on-line a project shot on PDW-F350 XDCamHD @ 35 Mbps via HD-SDI into FCP 5.1.1 using Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94 JPEG codec. We now want to on-line the project using the 35Mbps XDCamHD codec. We know that we can use HD-SDI to digitize to another codec, but are hoping to not recompress the footage. 10-bit uncompressed HD will not work for us as we are using G-Raids and can not handle uncompressed HD.

Hi Eli,

You will need to update to the latest Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 in order to obtain the XDCAM HD codec. While Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 allowed you to import XDCAM HD material, it was transcoded to HDV for playback. Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 includes a native implementation of XDCAM HD.

Now that Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 has added the XDCAM HD codecs, I believe it should be relatively easy for us to add easy setups for it in a driver update. We have a driver update due soon to add support for DeckLink HD Studio so hopefully we might add new easy setups in that release.

Hi Eli,

You can also try modifying an 8-bit easy setup to use the XDCAM HD codec. You should be using an 8-bit output so in View > Video Display, select an 8-bit option that matches your framerate.

Luke and Kristian, thank you for your quick respionse. I neglected to mention we have already updated to FCP 5.1.2. The problem is that we've been posting for the past two months and are now ready to on-line/upres. We were hoping that when 5.1.2 was released we would be able to re-degitize through the Firewire at 35Mbs. The problem is referencing the FCP project. Looks like the only way it will be easy is if the Blackmagic XDCAM HD codec is released in time. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thank you.

Hi Eli,

There will be no Blackmagic XDCAM HD codec. The easy setups are using components already installed in FCP. Email me offlist at support[at]blackmagic-design.com with information about the frame rate of your XDCAM HD video and I'll be happy to send you an easy setup.
