Looking at getting one so some question?
by Sean Davison on Nov 8, 2005 at 2:35:16 pm

Now that My Cinewave is on it's last legs I need to up grade and like the Decklink but I'm a bit confused.

I fancy the Multibridge Studio but cant work out what sort of PCI card it comes with if any. I've got a G5 with PCI x but 2 slots are being used up so Ive only got one free.

How long is the lead that connects the Multibridge to the PCI card and can I use a 3m one?

I have a little known audio network called MLAN which Yamaha promised would be all the rage by now. Unfortunatly the word clock implementation is very flaky. If I try to use my Cinewave card I cant use my MLAN 01x desk (it drops the wordclock connection.) It looks as if you have more word clock control with Decklink - is this the case and can I sync it to my macs word clock?

Hi Sean
As a former Cinewave owner, I feel your pain. Keep in mind the Multibridge Studio isn't shipping yet, but I spent a lot of time at the Blackmagic booth at NAB. The Multibridge Studio is designed around PCI Express, The card that goes in the computer is a very simple interface card, all the video processing happens in the MB itself. They mentioned 2 lengths of cable that could be used between the interface card and the MB, and I think the longest one was over 3 meters (but don't quote me on that) Grant Petty was saying that the cable has to be spec'd very carefully and there is a limit on the length. Blackmagic spoke as well about an interface card for existing Powermac owners that will convert PCI-X to PCI-express although you won't have the speed of PCI Express.

If I were you, I'd hang on until the Multibridge and the new quad-processors Powermacs ship. The combination of the two is going to be very powerful.

Cheers

OK - I'm confused - PCI X is different from PCI express? Is my new dual 2GB soon to be obsolete? Will the Multibridge studio run on the G5 I Have now? (Has PCI express)

I'm going to be using it for HD and DVC Pro HD

Hi Sean,

PCI-X is not the same as PCIe (PCI Express).

If you have a old PCI-X G5 with Dual processors you will need to buy the Blackmagic PCIe to PCI-X bridge card.

If you have the new PCIe Dual core G5s that where announced a couple of weeks ago you use the simple PCIe to external PCIe adaptor included with the Multibridge Extreme.

Give me a call on 01752 704 891 and I will go over it with you.
