Heads need replacemement??!!!

I've been using a DVX 100B for about 2 years now. It's been used to record almost exclusively to external hard drives. The heads have less than 100 hrs on them, yet the last time I recorded to tape I there was some serious artifacting. I sent it away to have it checked out and the service center says the heads are completely shot. Unfortunately, the camera is now out of warranty.
I'm curious - has any other DVX user out there had to replace heads with so few hours on them? Is there something else I should try - besides cleaning them - before giving up hope?
Thanks.

It happens- heads can be damaged by moisture or dust just as easily as by overuse... But if you're recording to hard drive mostly- why bother? It's cheaper to just buy a new camera at this point...
