First film with dvx-100
by Maxime Michaud on Oct 12, 2009 at 4:46:46 am

Hello, I make a short film with a DVX-100.
I shot in 24p standard.
As editing software, I Premiere CS4 and Vegas 9.
I know the best properties to transfer my video camera to my computer ?
I know the best properties to complete my project.
Model ? Ntsc 24p ?
-field order ? None (progressive analysis ?)
Frequency image ? 23,976 film ivtc ?
-type fuzzy ? Gaussian ?
-mode deinterlacing ? Merge fields ?
Bar timing ? (lossy smpte ? 29,97 fps)

Then, It is possible to convert this video HD PAR more ?
How to get the best possible quality ?

If I add an effect Magic Bullet, The image has a small earthquake, It is not stable, Is this normal ?

Brief, I have advice.

Thank you

Je ne pense pas que le logiciel de traduction est très bonne. J'ai lu la même chose que précédemment. Mais je vais essayer de répondre en anglais.

[Maxime Michaud] "I shot in 24p standard...I know the best properties to transfer my video camera to my computer ? "

You should follow the instructions of your editing software. You should remove the 3:2 pulldown from the 24p footage before you begin to edit. To make pulldown removal easier, you should capture individual shots only. Do NOT capture an entire tape as a single clip. Do NOT capture a group of shots as a single clip.

[Maxime Michaud] "Model ? Ntsc 24p ?
-field order ? None (progressive analysis ?)
Frequency image ? 23,976 film ivtc ? "

This is difficult to understand.
After you remove the 3:2 pulldown, the actual frame rate of 24p footage is 23.976 frames per second. Many editing programs call this 23.98. It is just a nickname -- "un pseudo-nom" -- for 23.976 frames per second. When you edit, you should use this frame rate.
The field order for NTSC DV footage is Lower Field First. It is 720x480.

[Maxime Michaud] "Then, It is possible to convert this video HD PAR more ? How to get the best possible quality ? "

If you upconvert to High Definition, the picture will not look good. The picture will need help. There is a plugin called "Instant HD" that can help, but it can not work miracles. here is a link:

[Maxime Michaud] "If I add an effect Magic Bullet, The image has a small earthquake, It is not stable, Is this normal ? "

It is not normal. I think you did not remove the 3:2 pulldown from the footage first. You must remove the pulldown from your footage before you do anything. Follow the instructions of your editing software to do this.

[Maxime Michaud] "As editing software, I Premiere CS4 and Vegas 9. "

I'm sorry, but I can't help with these. I use Apple's Final Cut Pro.

I would just like to know the best way to import my video.
I shot in 24p standard.
How do I capture to my computer ?
I guess that i'm making mistakes and it's why it does not work when I add effects on my video.

[Maxime Michaud] "How do I capture to my computer? "

Vous devez suivre les instructions de votre logiciel de montage pour la capture vidéo et la suppression pulldown 3:2.

I do not understand... Really sorry.
What do I have to do ? First, I import with what ?
I have vegas and premiere. Or is there any good software to import from the camera ? I shooted in 24p standard.

You are saying that I have to delete the 3:2 pulldown ? What is this ? I don't see any instructions with my softwares ? I can only choose if I import in 29... or 24...

And after at the montage ?... ?

Well, I just need clear help, a guideline to start.

[Maxime Michaud] "...I shooted in 24p standard.."

You shot in 24p, but the camera recorded the video in 29.97. How can this happen?

All NTSC standard-definition video must be 29.97 frames per second, with two interlaced fields. This is the technical standard. As the camera shoots 24 frames each second, it borrows fields from those 24 frames to create the extra frames necessary to meet the 29.97 technical standard. It borrows these frames in a certain pattern. It is called 3:2 Pulldown, and it has been used for more than 50 years to show 24 fps movies on 29.97 fps television.

If you are going to do one or more of the following things:
  • Make a 24p DVD
  • Record your completed video to actual celluloid film, which is called a "film out"
  • Put your video onto the internet
  • Use software like Adobe After Effects or Apple's Motion with your video

You must remove the 3:2 pulldown from the 29.97 video, which creates video files with a frame rate of 23.976 frames per second. This frame rate is also called 23.98 frames per second. You must remove the 3:2 pulldown before you begin editing. You must edit in a 23.976 edit timeline.

If you do NOT plan to do ANY of the things listed above, you can capture the video without removing 3:2 pulldown.

[Maxime Michaud] "...I have vegas and premiere. Or is there any good software to import from the camera?"

You can not IMPORT video from the DVX 100. This camera does not have a hard drive or a memory card to record the video. It can not transfer video files directly to a computer hard drive.

You must CAPTURE video from the DVX 100. You do this using your video editing software. The editing software controls the camera, and it plays the video from the camera and records it on a computer hard drive.

Both Premiere and Vegas can capture the video from the camera. Both Premiere and Vegas can remove the 3:2 pulldown from the video. Premiere and Vegas have different ways of doing these things. You must choose which editing program to use, and you must follow the chosen software's instructions for doing these things.

[Maxime Michaud] "I don't see any instructions with my softwares?"

You must find the instructions. I don't know where the instructions are located. I use Final Cut Pro, and I don't know how to use Premiere or Vegas.

If you need more help capturing video, you can ask on the Creative COW's Premiere or Vegas forums.

My problem is still not resolved...
I only found instructions about removing 3:2 pulldown for Adobe After Effects, which I do not have...nobody is answering my questions... if i knew i'd shot in 24p advanced, or just in 30p...
