I have the HMC150.I have filled an SDHC card and want to back up the files to an external hard drive. I will not have FCP for several months. Should I drag the .MTS files to the drive or wait until I have FCP and have converted them to another format and then save them. I have a macbook pro

Backing up the contents is fine- FCP doesn't care whether you're ingesting from a hard drive or directly from a card. As long as you keep everything from the card you're fine.

I would also add that it is best to copy the entire SDHC card, rather than just the MTS files.
