When buying a used camera is there a rule of thumb regarding the number of hours the camera was used to stay away from? I.e. too many hours of usage? Seems that the cameras I am finding are listed as low as 2hrs tro as high as 802 with a huge difference in price. For a camera that is a year old - what would be a good number?

BTW, I haven't bought one yet and would be interested in anyone that has one for sale.

Barry

Well obviously the lower the better because it's less wear and tear. I've seen cameras with 500 hours chugging away but once you get over 1000 that's heavy heavy usage. That's a camera that is probably in major need of TLC unless it was treated incredibly carefully. I'd be wary. These days you can still get a DVX100 brand new for a decent price. Might not be a bad call.

what would you consider a decent price? The price at B&H? I keep reading horror stories of bait and switch operators. I just lost out on a used one on ebay at $1400 ugh.

Yeah somewhere in the 2000 to 2499 price range would be a fair price. Call up Abel Cine in NY and LA and tell them I sent ya. Maybe they even have a rental camera or demo they might be wanting to part with. That's a safer bet than something on eBay in general.

Personally I'd go for something that could overcrank like an HVX200 or Sony EX1. Don't get me wrong I love my DVX100 but I don't know I'd still get one new in 2008 just because there are so many full HD options out there. That said, if it's a budget concern the DVX100 is more than up to the task and rightly remains one of the most popular if not the most popular standard definition DV camera in the world because of its beautiful 24p.

I looked at the HVX200 and the EX1 but the cost is to high for a newbie like me. I have a lead on a DX100B with a 100 hrs that seem more my speed. So I'll give that a go I think. I imagine I will have allot of questions - but this forum seems like a wealth of good info. Looking forward to being a participating member. Is there any book or DVD recommended for new users of the DVX100??
