Timecode Missing On My Cheap Deck
by Jason McCaffrey on Jun 1, 2008 at 7:36:49 pm

Hi folks,

I recorded some audio to minidv using a DVX. Now I'm trying to capture said audio and the timecode isn't showing up on my cheap consumer camera, thus not allowing me to log and capture like normal. I can set Final Cut to "non-controllable device" as a work-around and capture just fine, but it's kind of annoying because I have notes on the audio based on the timecode.

The DVX was set to F5 (24p) when shooting. I didn't (don't?) think it mattered, but I guess the question is: if shooting in 24p, will the timecode fail to show up when using a camera that doesn't know what 24p is?

I don't have easy access to the DVX again, but I'm curious to see if the timecode would show if I played the tape back through there.

At this point, I'm just going to have to capture without timecode, but I'm curious if any of you have opinions on this. Thanks!

Jason

Yes, your timecode will be visable on the DVX. As you've discovered, consumer products typically don't show timecode.

I am curious (though I not too familiar with FCP) if once you bring your content into FCP, if it does not recognize the timecode.

Seems to me the TC info should be part of the data stream from your tape. Of course, that's just a guess.

Good Luck
