720/24p over 60p output?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could provide any suggestions for a problem a director friend of mine has.
He shot a film on the varicam but for various reasons the production got halted now he's looking to start up again soon and wants to watch the tapes to appraise what has/hasnt been shot and if anything can be re-shot.
I was reading the Compatibility Chart on the AJ-HD1400 leaflet and according to this if he connected the composite output to a dvd recorder then you end up with a 480/24p over 60i monochrome picture. Has anybody tried this before?
Any suggestions or ideas how he can either get the tapes onto dvd or what he really wants its quicktime file (I beleive he's running an older version of adobe premiere so digitising wont work) would be greatly appreciated.
He lives in the UK and working within PAL systems.

Ian,
If you have access to a 1400 VTR you can do any one of a number of things; use the deck to play the tapes for viewing, eith in HD on a proper monitor (one that will, accept HD-SDI or analog HD) or use a downconverted output to view (in full color) on SD-SDI, Composit or component monitor. These same feeds will allow input into NLE's that accept any of these connections or even dub to DVD recorder. The 1400 is a very versatile device fand allows many workflow solutions to using DVCPRO100 material.

Hi John thank you for your reply.
I was hoping you could do something like this with the deck. But according to the compatability leaflet I read from Panasonic doesn't the picture come out as monochrome (no sync on SDI) when coming out of composite downconverted when the media is recorded as 720/24p over 60p?

No
you could also tell the deck to downconvert via the Component V-out also.
Then the DVDS would be in color.
it sounds as if you are connected to the "super" out by mistake.

[Gary Adcock]it would be a frame rate conversion to go from 23.98/59.94 on the master to 50i on the DVD
But the tapes aren't shot at 23.98/59.94 they are shot at true 24fps using the 60hz option on the varicam unless im mis-understanding the way the Varicam records to tape.
Wouldn't the deck be able to speed up the picture by 4.1x in order to create 25/50 on the output

Sorry an assumption error on my part. You are correct, the content is 24.0 / 60.0 on the tape.
and that is even worse for you-
"Wouldn't the deck be able to speed up the picture by 4.1x in order to create 25/50 on the output " Because that is a Frame Rate conversion and most decks do not do that easily.
(it is easier task in 1080 since there are not any duplicate frames to deal with)
Those 24/60 dvd's will still play in a computer however.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the advice, i've just been given access to the deck AJ-HD1400 and Final Cut Studio 2 so im going to digitise the clips and have them as QT files.
Does FCP support the 60hz 720/24p PAL shooting format, i'd imagine it would be. Hopefully I will be able to come over the firewire into the FCP.
