Backing up Varicam tapes

Greetings,
Here is a very basic question: What is the best way to back-up original Varicam tapes?
I am working in 25p (PAL) and I have access to the Panasonic HD1700 deck. (I do not wish to copy the tapes to HD1700 using the camera as a playback deck).
Regarding software, I am currently using FCP 4.5 (upgrade pending) and a BMD card.
I suppose I could digitize the best scenes to a 720p/25 timeline, but the problem seems to be in exporting 720p/25 back to the HD1700 without any loss.
Any insight regarding a lossless backup procedure would be greatly appreciated, many thanks!

This is Joan...I hope that you are happy and well. I can not believe I have found some trace of you. You probably will never see this e-mail, but it is worth trying.
I wish I knew the answer to backing up Varicam tapes. I wish I knew what Varican tapes are. I am certain you have figured it out by now.
I found you in Creative Cow, however I doubt if you will get this message. I can only hope.
I hope you remember me. I am always looking for you and when I found all the websites about you and your art, I was so happy. Your accomplishments are amazing and I know your family and friends are so proud of you. I am proud of you. I could only see a little of your art on various websites...Secrets of Soca and Water Waves. In all my reading about you, I noticed the critics are very good to you. I have read almost every website about you. Astonishing.
I think of you often. I know it is in the past, but it was important to me. You have been a part of me since. I wish I could have been with you, but there was a child and I could not leave him. It was horrible not seeing you and being with you. I did not want to move back here and I missed you so much. You may not believe that, but it is the truth. I loved you then, as I love you now. The only comfort for me was knowing that you had seen it in my eyes.
If I did not love you, I would not have left so many messages on your recorder (we can laugh about it now)...I'm sorry to have taken up the whole tape. Someone important may have tried to call you. Only someone in love would do that.
It is good to tell you these things...even if you do not get this message, it is good to have written it. I hope you laugh a little at this.
