Hiran de SIlvaStreaming video - best solution?
by on Apr 26, 2012 at 8:47:32 am

I'm producing a 5 min video for web streaming. I need it to be smooth and viewable in most parts of the world. The content will be (1) me speaking on camera (2) PowerPoint animations (3) screen recordings. Using Camtasia 7 for production.

I need to decide on size and where to host it from. Ideally 940x470. I tried a test on Screencast and it buffers for 30 sec before starting. I need it to be somewhat immediate.

What would be the best practical way for streaming? Is 940x470 too ambitious? What other hosting choices are there?
(Apple promo videos are big and smooth. Do they have streaming technologies inaccessible to us?)
Thanks
Hiran

940x470 is an interesting choice. I've not run into that size before. Why have you chosen that resolution? What frame rate?

Re: buffering - buffering may be unavoidable as there are many facture that come into play... your viewer internet connection, your hosts streaming load at any given moment, etc.

Hi Tom,

Re. the 940 (!) I had a web page 940 pixels wide (from a Dreamweaver template I think) and I wanted the video to stretch fully across. And wanted 2:1 aspect ratio.
Yes, I see I'm after an ideal that may not be there. I noticed that the Apple iPad video was buffering for me (in the UK) this morning:(
I guess I shall have to experiment with this. Host at Screencast? Host myself at my site's hosting? etc.

Any tips still welcome, anybody.
Thanks
Hiran

Re: 940x470 resolution. Since you have chosen a resolution with a non-standard aspect ratio (4:3 and 16:9 being most common) you will need some sort of cropping method for your video. That would allow you to take video that has a 1280x720 resolution and crop it down to 940x470. You would need to shoot that video knowing that you will be cropping out a large section of it.

Regarding streaming... there are numerous video streaming/hosting services (YouTube, Vimeo, etc). You would just need to test them to see if you got the desired result. Remember that you will have vitually no control over the lag time at the start of the video as it really depends on your viewer's internet connection to your video streaming/hosting service.

Might be a good idea, at least at the start, to try to make things as simple as possible... use a more standard spect ratio, for example. It greatly increases your chances of success.
