The video link above is a short excerpt from a video uploaded to YouTube that has had a strange distortion or warping applied to it by YouTube's encoding. Has anyone seen this before or know why this has happened and how to avoid it in the future?

Cheers

DP

You're video isn't converted yet but you need to provide key information if you'd like help.
What was the frame size and codec you uploaded?

Sorry, forgot to add those details. The video was encoded as H264 and was 1080p footage at 25fps out of Premiere. The original displays none of the distortion in the YouTube conversion.

I've never seen Youtube cause anything like that before but I'm looking at a Vimeo upload.
It would be better to see YouTube directly.
What are the H.264 specs in detail (container?) and the complete frame size 1920x1080 or 1440x1080?
What does the file look like when played in Quicktime or Windows Media Player on the desktop.

Hi, I'm afraid the original YouTube vid has been taken down due to the screw up.

The H264 was in .mov container at 1920 x1080. QT and WMP play the video fine. The desktop version of the video has no problems at all. The Vimeo upload is completely faithful to what the YouTube transcode looked like.

I've never seen anything like that in YouTube or any other transcode before.

[Django Pither] "I've never seen anything like that in YouTube or any other transcode before."

It could be a random problem on their part. Try uploading again. Also test by uploading another file with the exact some specs. That gives you the "double blind" test as it were. You'll get a good idea whether it was a random issue or specific to that one file.

Thanks for the advice Craig. I have not been able to replicate the issue. It was more the nature of what happened to the footage that I was hoping to discover. It seems such a strange outcome considering the footage that i wanted to know what was going on under the hood as it were.

I've never seen anything like it.
It does equate with any encoder issues I've seen before.
It's almost as if it's some kind of motion compensation issue.
