Capture cards
by Roman Bojorquez on Sep 13, 2009 at 11:41:30 pm

We have an event coming up in two months that we want to capture and stream live over the internet. We have been told by the content delivery company we are going to use, that the flash format is the best and the multi-stream is the best way to allow the most amount of people to participate. We recently purchased a HDV video camera (memory only - no tapes) and are wondering what the best capture cards are for doing this type of work. We have yet to purchase the computer pending some recommendations on the cards.

If anyone has any experience doing this and would like to share your knowledge, I would much appreciate it.

thanks
R

Have a look at this:

If you have built in Firewire there's no need for a capture card.

I'd personally go for the Mac platform for many different reasons, but if you simply have to have the cheapest computer around, then you'll probably end up with a PC, and regret it in the long run.

I'd second Mac and wirecast. However, HDV broadcast is truly bandwidth restricted. It takes a lot to stream an HDV signal. I would use the mac and wirecast to stream an SD signal to UStream or if you are really on a budget, skip wirecast and DV over mac or pc laptop to UStream. If you will be doing this often, the mac is the way to go.

Will look at using a mac. My problem is, I contacted Wirecast and they don't have any recommendations for converting SVideo or component video to digital that works with their product. We have a digital video camera, but our main camera is s-video or component. I agree with what you said about streaming in SD, HD at this poing takes up way too much bandwidth, at least in our testing.

Hi

A cheap and reliable option is
http://www.decklink.com/products/videorecorder/

And if your server is a Flash server just use this free encoder/push to server solution
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder/
Works on Windows or Linux
