corrupted on-demand .wma files
by Thomas Wildgen on Jun 29, 2009 at 6:11:19 pm

Hopefully someone here has a suggestion to help me.
For the second time in two weeks I have been notified of a program that is on our server that has gaps in the audio. When I try to play it back through the WM player, it plays till it hits a gap then I get the notice that the file is corrupt. If I bring the file into Vegaspro8, I can see 4-5 15 to 20 second gaps in the audio.
Question: is there a diagnostic tool that I can use to try and find out what happened to these audio programs? they are both over a year old and I don't have the original anymore to see if the problem lies with the original.
the company that I work for is using a windows media server to stream both audio and video. Is there anything that could be happening on the server that could be corrupting these files?

[Thomas Wildgen] "Question: is there a diagnostic tool that I can use to try and find out what happened to these audio programs?"

Vegas is you diagnostic tool - it's showing you what and where the probllem is. Nothing could tell you how the problems happened but possibly an experienced human ear could take an educated guess.

[Thomas Wildgen] "the company that I work for is using a windows media server to stream both audio and video. Is there anything that could be happening on the server that could be corrupting these files?"

Quite possibly. How 'healthy' is the server & storage?

The "health" of the server in question is unknown to me. I have sent a note to our tech dept. outlining the cases where I have seen the corrupted files. If they have any insights or suggestions I will let you know. The reason I asked about any diagnostic tools is my worry that there are more files corrupted on the server that no one knows about.(we have almost 3 TB of programming available for On-demand)

Thanks.

Tom

There are enterprise analysis tools around that could help track files with corruption, but you're looking at spending 20-60k.

thanks for the suggestion!
I have just been notified of more "data Termites" on one of our servers, you mentioned that there are enterprise analysis tools available but they are costly. Do you have any names of these programs? Or suggestions on the words to use in a search. When I do a google search, the browser is clogged with tons of little utilities that I cannot tell will do the job or not. Of course our tech dept has most of their people out on vacation this week.
maybe I can point them in the right direction to find the problem files.
thanks for the help!

Tom
