iWeb quicktimes are slow
by Ben Northenor on Jun 22, 2009 at 3:06:17 am

I have my website with godaddy, but all my quicktimes take so long to load. How can I export these so they load faster?

My website: http://www.bennorthenor.com

It just takes way to long to load and I'm afraid that when I am looking for a job and I send out my resume and link to my website, people won't wait to watch my reel. They'll just not call me. I need a job. haha. I'll take any advice you have. Thank you in advance!

They loaded quickly for me but I'm on a very fast 30,000kbps connection.

What is the speed of your or, more importantly, your typical viewer's connection?
What data rate did you encode the files at?

You MUST know your target in order to encode appropriately.

I encoded them through Quicktime. I exported them as a quicktime from Final Cut Pro, then took it through quicktime and exported for web. They load fairly fast on my computer too, but I was at my father in laws on fathers day and I went to show him something and a 3:15 clip took about 25 minutes to load. It was kind of embarrassing because it looked like i didn't know what I was doing. I was just wandering if there is a faster way but keeping the best quality.

What's your father in law's internet connection speed?
If they're only taking a few seconds on my system and apparently for you too, you may be OK.
Data rate and duration have a big impact on load speed. Your clips are short. I haven't checked the encoded data rate yet. That's a setting you have control over in Quicktime Pro as well as Compressor.
Unless you're in a rural area or are targeting people in economic disadvantaged areas, you'd have to assume that any professional looking to hire you is going to have a reasonably fast internet connection. Generally if it loads fast on a 1500kbps (1.5 mbps) internet connection you should be OK but that's only my opinion. Generally a data rate of 800-1200kbps should be fine in that case.

I'm not sure what his internet connection is. I live in Los Angeles so it shouldn't be a huge problem. I would figure people in this town have some quick internet speeds. I really appreciate your help. I guess I should be good to go. I will keep it as it is. Again, thanks for all your help.

[Ben Northenor] "I live in Los Angeles so it shouldn't be a huge problem. I would figure people in this town have some quick internet speeds"

I live in London, England and residential internet connection speeds vary from 128 Kilobits/s to 50 Megabits/s
