Video quality on web
by Natasha Paulson on Jun 6, 2009 at 11:42:09 pm

Hello! My boss wants me to post some videos on her website, which is run by BluSupport I think it's called. The requirements for uploading videos are that they be no more than 10 MB, 400x300 and in Flash 7 Format. It was a bit of a chore to condense all the videos and after they are online, the quality is really crappy. Very pixelated, especially the transitions between scenes. I've been using Adobe Encoder to export them into Flash.

Can anyone tell me the best way to condense these videos so that the quality is better and it's not so trial and error? Let me know if you need more details.

Thanks!

Sorry, the only advice I can give is get rid of that web host company, Flash 7? 10MB max? 400x300? ridiculous!

[Natasha Paulson] "equirements for uploading videos are that they be no more than 10 MB, 400x300 and in Flash 7 Format."

[Natasha Paulson] "the quality is really crappy"

You saw the other response. You're not likely to get the above to look good with those specs. I'd leave any host that had limits like that. You can buy a domain name on GoDaddy and get their "free" ad based hosting page and get betters specs than that.

Natasha, there is a ray of hope for modest improvement. I had little success getting great quality using the Adobe Flash encoder. It pixelates too much for my taste. I get better results with Sorenson Squeeze Pro using the On2 VP6 encoder. Pricey, but the results are pleasing.

400x300 is a bit small. Still, you should still be able to get great looking visuals at any size. If they look bad even when small, your results won't improve with size and might get worse. You probably need to use a better encoder.

You don't mention versions nor settings so I can't evaluate what's happening at all.
Basically Flash for video is Flash 7 - Sorenson Spark/H.263, Flash 8 - On2VP6, Flash 9, H.264.
There's some variations I believe in H.264 codecs but
Flash 7 and Flash 8 are the same codec regardless of app.
If you're seeing difference it is likely a settings issue. Certainly certain apps give you more access to features and processing filters but you don't have any details for meaningful evaluation.
