Best Compression for web?
by Clint Hornsby on Dec 2, 2008 at 1:53:40 am

Curious, we have clients that say our videos take to long to load. We are currently compressing them using H264 at full quality, multi pass. Does anyone know what the best setting or codec for web compression would be in order to create a streaming file that will be fast and clear? We currently use either MPEG Streamclip but also have Compressor.

Many Thanks

More details please:

What datarate are you currently using?

How long on average are your clips?

What sort of connection speed are your clients using in general?

Are you streaming using a streaming server or progressive streaming using a webserver?

Care to share a link to a sample clip?

Below is a link to a sample.

The data rate is set to unlimited I believe. Our clips are on average around 10 minutes and most of our clients are your average middle to upper middle income family so I would assume they are connected via cable modem or DSL. We are also streaming using a streaming server.

Thanbks

Wow, that clip was 3550Kb/s! (Hollywood DVD datarate!) - you could probably get away with 500-700Kb/s.

Not sure what your audio is set to but that probably needs looking at - you only need 120-160Kb/s for great sounding audio with the AAC codec.

Your frame size is not quite 16:9 - I suggest 512x288 or 480x270.

Lastly, you don't need a streaming server to deliver these clips, they are progressive download and only need a cheap ordinary web (HTTP) server to do the job.

Start with a preset in compressor, MPEGStream clip is not the right tool for the job.
