Streaming live HD for IPTV
by Chris Dickinson on May 27, 2008 at 6:14:28 pm

Hi,

I have searched the forum extensively and not really found an answer to my conundrum... So here goes:

I have been asked by a client to set up a live HD outside broadcast fly-away kit for a daily live show that will be streamed to a server from location.

I am looking at using 3 Canon XH-G1s - outputting their SDI signal to a mixer (incorporating graphics and VT where appropriate). Alongside the pics we will have audio from two presenters - sent separately to the video signal.

The only thing I am scratching my head on is the best solution for turning the HD output of the mixer, together with the audio, into a signal that we can send live to our IPTV client which will then be streamed live by them...

I am waiting to hear back from the IPTV client re. what specific format they would like it delivered in - the only thing I know is that they want it HD... Thus to be safe I need a solution that will handle various different compression formats.

I have been looking at the Digital Rapids StreamZHD - not sure if this will do exactly what we want - keen to have advice on better/cheaper options.

Thanks V much,

Chris D

My first concern is how are you going to push a live HD stream to your server? Check with your ISP to determine your upload speed limit. Most cable connections are very limited on the upload side.
My second concern would be for your audience. What is going to be your bitrate and can your audience receive that much data per second.
The smallest type of HD is 1280 x 720 and that might require 3 or more mbps to look decent.

The folks at Viewcast.com offer Osprey capture cards that can do the encoding.

First you have to decide what HD TV means to the client. HD is not really a streaming standard. Do they mean 16X9 high quality video? Or 1920x1080 and 1280x720p to a TV set?

The answer is probably to be found in the video format that the client needs to receive. Post the format and I’ll give you some suggestion as to what might be a good solution.

Hi Brett, Mike,

Thanks for your responses - your questions are similar to the ones I have already posed to my client - but as MY client is the production company rather than the broadcaster, all they can do is forward on my queries, which have yet to be answered...!

Anyhow, I have been informed that for the short-term at least the broadcaster has decided not to take the show live after all, as they don't currently have the capacity... Still, this leaves other questions abt how we should deliver - on tape or via FTP etc... Only thing I am sure of is that they specified HD - but whether that's 720p, 1080i etc I don't know.

I will post again when I am able to furnish more info.

Thanks again.

Chris

And if they mean IPTV, they're probably looking for a MPEG-2 transport stream, not a "streaming" format. Check out something like the Inlet Spinnaker for a reasonably priced multicodec IPTV encoder.
