Streaming PDF's !?
by Bob Kiger on Apr 7, 2005 at 10:09:38 pm

My ISP is telling me that some of my PDF's which are as large as 2.5MB are impossibly slow to load. Is there a strategy for:

1. reducing size while retaining readability
2. Doing something to keep the viewers interest while the PDF is downloading.

If this is off topic for this forum, please forgive.

If this is about the Art Smith letter, well it downloaded in 10 seconds on my cable modem connection. However 2.5MB is way too large for a one page letter: contact be by email and I will send you a version that only takes 264KB, about one-tenth the size.

Cruiser Bob of Maui, huh?
by Bob Hudson on Apr 8, 2005 at 3:43:56 am

Just looked at more of your website and noticed you live in Oceanside, which I left 3 years ago for Kansas (yeah, I know, dumb idea).

Just the other day my wife and I were reminiscing about careening down the from the summit of Haleakala on Cruiser Bob's bikes: still the scariest time of her life :)

Good luck with your new endeavor.

Your wife was correct to be scared. The downhill bike trip on Haleakala has over 130 curves, many of them 180+ degrees. I closed Cruiser Bob's in 1996 because I was sued out of existence by a sue happy family that took our insurance company for $1,000,000.

I wanted to challenge in court but got the royal shaft by my partners and my insurance company. Two good things came out of Cruiser Bob's for me . . . both videography.

1. I shot over 150 trips down the mountain over 12 years, with cameras in every mount including helmet cam.

2. When I started looking pretty pro, with a JVC helmetcam and a Betacam SP in a backpack, the Park Rangers stopped me with a new law. No cameras (still or video) allowed on any two wheel vehicle in the National Park.

So I've got an inside edge on my upcoming "Cruiser Bob's Volcano Bicycle Adventures" DVD, which is due for release in late summer.

It's a feature length DVD with great slack key Hawaiian music and lots more. Spread the word and help me get back on track.

Thanks,

We when did our Crusier Bob's trip of course I could not hold a camcorder (even my little 8mm) while flying down the mountain, so I went back on another day and shot footage of another group: we call wore those yellow suits, so who could tell it wasn't us? :)

Come back to this forum when it's time for advice on compressing samples of the DVD for the web.

I'm back with a 2 minute DV full screen m2v of the bike coming off the top of the volcano. It was edited in Premiere and I would like to reduce it's size to 320 x 240 and stream it in the most efficient way. It is designed to promote DVD sales

My web authoring software is GoLive and I'm ready!

BTW: Does anybody use a rollup of a disclaimer like the FBI thing while their movies are loading?

For best results, export from Premiere's timeline (original DV source files) using Adobe Media Encoder as Windows Media Video. Use the "WM9 NTSC 512K Download" preset.

Thanks Mike,

Right now I doing an all nighter to try to clean up my GoLive relationship with the on-line server. As soon as all is clean, I will stream some video.

Anybody out there that speaks "Go Live"?

The "All Nighters" over and it is a beautiful Sunday morning here in Oceanside.

My goal for today is to get the downhill video clip, which is now rendering in WMA9, onto my website today. Remembering that I'm a neophyte with GoLive, what is best technique from here?

Uploading to your host can be done with Windows XP Pro which includes FTP capabilities.
In IE, enter ftp://www.yourwebsite.com

Then after giving your name and password, copy/paste files you want to upload.

Hi Mike,

It's not about FTP uploading . . . I've been doing that for years. It's about configuring the movie, which is now a good looking m2v into an optimal web streaming "script" for apparent quick loading by viewers.

I would like to "distract" with a disclaimer, while the movie loads in the bg. Like a slide show over movie load. I'm using GoLive FWIW.

[Bob Kiger] "It's about configuring the movie, which is now a good looking m2v into an optimal web streaming "script" for apparent quick loading by viewers. "

You will need to create a movie in the Windows Media format - WMV - not an m2v which will not stream on the web. Your movie will probably need to about 240x280 size, 10-15fps with datarate of aboout 400Kbps.

As for embedding that movie in a webpage, well I don't do Windows, but here's a tutorial on GoLive and embedded media: http://www.imd.macewan.ca/imd/content.php?contentid=42 - you could also just put a link to the movie and it will open in Windows Media Player.

But the key thing is to encode the movie for web streaming and, again, m2v will not work for that.

Bob is right on, Mpeg 2 wont play in Peroria or any place else, besides its way to high bitrate for web streaming.

I dont embed video is a web page...it is too restrictive on the audience. I just link directly to the video file which then plays in a free standing player (WMP).
I dont use GoLive, but in Front Page the code is writen from the Insert menu. Maybe Insert>Plug-in.

Not sure what Bob has in mind for the odd frame size, but suggest keeping it 4:3 with both #'s divisable by 16, like 320 X 240...480 X 360. 400 kbps is fine.

Re: Cruiser Bob of Maui, huh?

Actually, so far I don't think I've made any big mistakes. I opened premiere pro and selected a segment which I then transformed using WMA9 at 512 default setting and got a file.

That was according to an off-line message I got from Bob Hudson. I like the 320x240 size because it gives enough size to show the quality of the DVD show without being the show.

I couldn't find it right away because it was saved as Sequence 2 directly into the website folder. It is 3:09 long and I would like to hold onto it . . . but it is 12,502 Kb. So . . . that's very big! What next mon capitans :)

Well 512 Kbits/sec by 185 seconds divided by 8 for bytes is 11,840 and the difference is the audio.

The most important thing with anything on the web is to lower your expectations...

You can have image size, quality or small download size - but only any two. You cannot have all three, so you currently have a reasonable size, good quality and large download. That's normal.

You could have the same image size and a smaller download by compromising quality (bandwidth) or a smaller image size and good quality with smaller download.

These are the tradeoffs and why really great compressionists get paid better than any of us ;)

Cheers

Re: Cruiser Bob of Maui, huh?

There is an old Hollywood producers saying: "You can have anything you want . . . FAST, GOOD and CHEAP . . . pick TWO!" I'm not sure how that relates to the compression parameters but my clip is a great compression challenge.

First, the bike is coming off the top of a 10,000 foot volcano at speeds in excess of 35 mph. Second there are marquee titles running at the bottom of the frame CNN style. The motion of the titles can't be herky jerky so GOOD is definitely important for them and the motion artifacts of a moving bicycle.

320x240 is just a good size. Any smaller and you would lose the dynamism of the bike ride. That's FAST. So I guess I have to give up CHEAP . . . but I don't know what that means. Isn't there a technique where they punch a loading button and then have some task to do while it loads? Other forms of entertainment while it loads in b.g.

That's not just compression genius . . . it's "Hollywood"

You want image size, and you want quality, so you give up bandwidth/download time. No shortcuts.

Sure, people can start the download and, if they remember, come back to it. If the content is compelling enough that works for sure and with fast start even for 12 MB it' shouldn't be that long before something starts playing. that would start almost immediately on my home connection. (Just got bumped up to 3 Mbits/sec download at no extra cost. Sweet) On dialup forget it, although people on dialup have been known to download 27 MB 4 minute trailers for Star Wars pix.

Cheers

I find that for web video, the best results in terms of balancing quality and file size give me a file that is about 2MB for each miniute of video, sometimes less.

As suggested in another post, it's easy to end up with an audio track that is larger than the video track and that may be the case here.

OK so I'll make another WMA9 pass and lower the quality settings from the pre-set level. If I can get it down to 6MB and keep the look then that's a solution. Will be back after rendering.
