Avid Media Composer 2.6 to Final Cut Studio 2.0 and back again
I have a Media Composer Project that I'd like to take into Final Cut Studio Pro 2.0.
- Can I import all bins, media, etc. Or will we have to redigitize footage?
- Will I be able to export back?
- Considerations?
I am not the editor but rather the Director/Producer so the clearer and more detailed the response the more likely that I will go ahead a purchase the product.

The translation is sequence-based. Not bin or project-based. Our plug-ins do not translate media, we suggest you redigitize. It is possible with Pro Import FCP to use the plug-in option to "Use Existing Media" whereby the plug-in creates QuickTime reference movies to the Avid media. We don't recommend this, there are sometimes unhappinesses between FCP and the Avid QuickTime codec. But people do it.
- Will I be able to export back?
Pro Export FCP can export an OMF file from FCP that can be imported into your Avid. No video media is converted, it is like an EDL, no media.
- Considerations?
The plugs are really meant for one-time translations at the end of a post process. Offline/online type thing. Not really meant for back and forth work. Can be done, but it isn't ideal since each time you translate some info will be lost (especially effects with going FCP to Avid).
