Royalty Free Classical Music
by Thomas Mitchell on Sep 29, 2009 at 9:13:29 am

Hi there,

Im a video editor and am about to produce a high concept, high impact short show-reel for the company I work for.

Now music is obviously vitally important for this, I have heard that if a composer has been dead for a certain amount of years I can use there music without getting into trouble with copyright people, is this true?

Really I would like to use some Kings of Leon but know there would be plenty of red tape so instead might try and go for some Wagner, Bach or Mozart.

Thanks for your help in advance

The law stipulates you'd be able to use, for example, Mozart's Requiem composition without copyright infringement, but you would not be able to use a current recording of that work, like something performed by Saint Martin in the Fields performing Mozart's Requiem. IOW, you're free to use the sheet music however you want to record your own work, but you cannot use someone's current recording of that music without permission.

I'd go the stock music route. Revostock.com has music for cheap. You can find some gems in there.

If a composer has been dead for 70 years or more then you can use their music in your production as long as you have permission from the owners of the recording. For instance, George Gershwin died 70 years ago so his music including Rhapsody in blue has just come in to the public domain. At RoyaltyFreeClassicalMusic.co.uk, We have the rights to license over 800 downloadable compilation CDs, full length Classical music and Classical loops all for instant high quality preview and download. Marco,

Good call. It can be very difficult to track down the recording rights. I would play it "safe" Thomas just so that there are no worries and no confusion.
