It's a Mac. I had to use SP to get Firewire out - I got stuck in a situation where I had to use the camera for a studio shoot before I felt really comfortable with it, so I recorded to OnLocation for a little extra confidence.

Was it a Microsoft or Adobe update to blame? Possibly loading the Sony EX1 programs? Whatever hosed my system it wasn't easy to fix.

That depends on the data rate. With DVCPRO HD, the recommended maximum is 4.5 meters (~15 ft). With DV and HDV, you should be safe at 25-30 feet.
With repeaters, you can extend the range.

The SMVP file mainly contains metadata. That's where the info is kept for placeholders in the project prior to recording the clips, and then it's kind of a backup to what's stored in the clip.

The xml file that's created when you export from OnLocation is simply a list of the clips that you exported. It contains neither content (i.e., video) nor any metadata about them.

I have run into this before. If memory serves the HV30 does not put its HD signal out on the firewire connector. You could use HDMI to connect to your PC by adding an HDMI card into one of your spare motherboard slots, but OnLocation would not work w | | | | |

I've never used OnLocation, but in Premiere there is an Auto Scene Detect feature that you could use during capture. In theory, this will clip the files to cuts, each time the Record button was pressed. Perhaps OL has a similar feature.?

Capturing in OnLocation will not be possible. Premiere Pro definately can do.
As for 1080p, we support 1080PsF24/23.98 on that unit but not 50p or 60p.
