You can do it indirectly. Copy the texture tag that has the correct UV coords (control+drag) and then drag the second material from the material manager into the new tag's Material field.

Alternatively, you can add a display tag to each of your letters and keyframe the visibility option of the tags attributes. You can add the tag by going to the object manager - file - new tag - display tag.

Simple answer is to turn on snapping (or zoom *way* in) but - your purpose is to have top half one color bottom half another color? Then you could also use Selection Tags -add the torus -make it editable -choose the top polys -from the Selection
