Enter your Metadata in P2CMS save that to an SD card load that onto your P2 camera.
In FCP 7 Log and Transfer you can choose to use the clips name or any other custom naming you want.

Shotput Pro will do any digital media card, since it's just pulling everything off in an unaltered state. It lets you choose between a file size comparison, which is fast, or a byte for byte comparison, which takes longer but is much safer.

All you need to do is make sure your P2 cards are duplicated on 2 or more hard drives. Raid 1 or 5 is recommended. Shotput Pro from Imagine Products will take care of this automatically during the offload process.

Has nothing to do with spanning. I have never encountered an error offloading with ShotPut Pro.
Did you delete any clips from your P2 cards before offloading?
