Make sure that you are using the DV capture tool and not the HDV capture tool. Does Windows see the DV camcorder? If it doesn't Vegas never will. This could point to a bad firewire cable.

Certain cameras have that annoying sensor that just won't let the camera use the tape. You only need to black the first five seconds to get it to work. It can be a pain.

Most DVD recorders with firewire ports have those ports set to input only. They are also at the front of the deck to more easily connect the output of a DV camcorder (to record the output of a DV camera to a DVD).
