Re: Moving to __?___ city for TV / film production. Need advice!

I live in the Reno/Tahoe market and deal often with the SF/Bay Area and Sacramento markets. The people I know are not hiring. Just the opposite, people are closing shop. Even worse, production budgets are being reallocated to purchasing old debt issuance.

If you're in a financial position to move (6 months of living expenses in cash--food, rent, transportation, health insurance), then I'd go to NYC. Who knows? This could be YOUR chance to buy-in at low prices. No. I'd go to LA because I have family there. No. NYC because I have a friend living there. :) No. I'd spend that 6 months of living expenses by buying up equipment of the aforementioned out of business production companies!

Wherever you end up, take a drama class, so you can meet some actors. Attend local theater and meet local actors. You need people with chops, who are of various races, sexes, and ages.

Every creative writing department in the USA prints two copies of the candidates' final project. One copy goes to the graduate. The other copy goes to the library. I'll wager you can find an amazing story and get the rights for a very low price, if not "copy and credit."

And don't knock craigslist, I've met some very talented, well-regarded people over there.
