Oh man, I've been there Nick. When the people paying the bill get someone in the firm the job of playing 'tv reporter' it gets really tricky if they don't listen to advice.
Myself and the sound recordist (who was going crazy) pointed this out to the client but it just kept happening. In the end we just got two cameras and shot Q & A. Saved alot of grief. In fact sometimes, depending on the style off your show it can make for a better interview.
