Well, so many people on forums seem to scoff at the idea of HDV, plus it may limit the amount of places that can show the finished movie. I'm just trying to cover myself so that I don't put lots of blood, sweat and tears into a film that nobody can show.
I must confess that more time has been eaten up recently by tech concerns rather than by considering how to further develop my documentary. This is obviously not ideal, but I just don't want to do things the wrong way for want of a litttle thought and research. However, it's not an option to re-shoot my footage which is already compressed (both HDV and AVCHD), so even with the live set-up to bypass compression (I want to ingest full HD and transcode to ProRes HQ), there will be a mix of quality in the finished film. As there's plenty left to do, at least the bulk of it will be better quality. That's the root of this 'obsession' really, simply to obtain the best quality possible for the least money. As soon as that's sorted I'll feel more confident about booking my interviews, safe in the knowledge that my subjects are not being visually short-changed; it's ok to want the film to look beautiful!
Having said that, I realise that organising the content into a story that is meaningful and riveting is the main challenge...
