Well, his argument was: I work here and I use this music for the company projects, and I'm making the editing here in my free time, so I can use this music too.

To me it sounded confusing. He's using the company equipment and his boss know it. No problem there. They payed for the music library but I don't know the details of the purchase.

Nobody is charging money in this film so they think is like they are supporting an art project and no harm will be done. But I don't want the movie to be banned for festivals later because we "assumed" there was no problem using royalty free music.
