Get a paying job first to repay any outstanding student loans.
Don't worry about buying any equipment which is likely to be obsolete five months after you buy it.
Work on getting a freelance job at a production company or rental facility to learn the business from the inside out.
Keep in mind documentary makers except for the top end do not make a long term living in this genre.
Many of the best of them do sideline high paying commercial and feature work to support the documentary work which is their first love.
