Interesting. I can't recreate it here, but then again, I don't have your old project.

How old was this older project? Was it pre quicktime 7?

As for creating an easy setup, I don't think that's possible with 4 channels. If you start a new project, just make sure that you have the exact audio channels you want highlighted (turned on) in the clip settings tab of the log & cap window.
