belsokarKona 2/LH and HDCAM Capture/DownConvert/Online Questions...
by on Jan 18, 2006 at 11:52:27 pm

Alright, did a quick search, didn't see what I needed...here's the situation.

I have a dual 2.7 powermac g5.

I need to purchase either the Kona 2 or LH for the following purposes:

1. Capture from original HDCAM Masters and downconvert to SD/DV for editing purposes.
2. Re-Capture HDCAM source footage (full resolution) at online stage.
3. Output to an SD and/or HD monitor for color correction before recording out.
4. Record out to HDCAM deck upon project completion.

My main concern right now is that I seem to be getting mixed responses on what type of controller card and drive system to purchase to handle this type of project. Some claim a Firmtek SATA-type solution is fine, and will handle the sustained data rates needed to capture HD footage. Others say I need a fibre-channel type controller, or SCSI, or something faster than SATA. Just trying to get some more information on that issue.

Also I wouldn't mind verifying that the Kona cards I'm looking at will do what I'm expecting them to do as described above?

Thanks!
