Cole,

I am totally open to not being by the book. I was running IDE raids on Sonnet tempo's years ago. There is no doubt that savings can be had with a SATA setup and I would look at it very seriously if I was building a non HD system right now.

I have even run 8 bit uncompressed from a firewire 800 drive (living a bit dangerously. There are many reasons for going different routes and building different systems and they must suit the users workflow, budget, etc. I am not being critical of SATA as it looks like a very decnet technology. I have had several drives in G4's that I own and I agree that putting more than two drives in a G5 is not a great idea.

There are some very well priced scsi products and often with the cost of those sytems you are buying protected storage, so that in the event of drive failure you are not SOL. That kind of thing does matter if down time or redigitizing time is an issue at all. With drive sizes getting bigger we stand to loose more if our data is lost, so that is one nice reason to have things in raid 3 or 5 schemes. I think most of the sata stuff is riad zero.

Anyway, lots to talk and think about, but nobody is criticizing you for finding the most effective way for you .

David
