Gary,

After evaluating frames from Greg's original video vs. TGAs and a QT file made from those TGAs, it appears to me that the problem stemmed not from FCP, but rather from in-camera compression/interpolation on an area of semi-darkness in the BG. That area has visible artifacts right out of the camera, and any further compression, no matter how minor, simply amplifies those artifacts. Monitoring in the canvas dosen't help either...

Oh, and I'm sure your diatribe will be an interesting... I look forward to it.
