And that reference file is going to reference your RENDER files as pointed out. So the minute you make a change and that render file is deleted by FCP, your QT reference file will be useless.

The reference file is great for temporary things, like an export of a long project. You may like to export a reference file to then send to compressor for compression. But don't count on using that reference file later down the road after you've made changes or media managed or redigitized and rerendered for example.
