Thank you all for your insight!
The G5 has only the single optical bay, and it seems that there are more and more SATA interface drives and fewer and fewer PATA ones. I would rather leave a PCIe slot open for my future video card purchase (Thinking Decklink HD Extreme) rather than have it taken up with a card just to get an extra SATA port.
I also don't want to remove the Apple drive from the system. I've done that with other systems I've had and it sometimes causes MacOSX to not want to burn disks. Perhaps MacOS isn't as petulant about not seeing an Apple drive as it once was?
