I'm not sure why FCP is not playing your clips. I seem to recall that it doesn't work with any of the avid codecs but that info could be old.

What you CAN do is open them in Quicktime Pro and export using any of the codecs that FCP will work with. Just choose whichever codec the rest of the clips in your sequence are and you won't need to render them again when they're placed in the sequence.
