Are you sending from FCP to Compressor? If so, try exporting a QT ref, and then opening compressor as a stand alone appliccation. The "Send To" is no good really. Either takes forever or crashes. Also try targetting a different drive, maybe the desktop and also reset background encoding in compressor.
