Using FCS2 with HDV & DV, Going to Film
by Morgan Drmaj on Feb 6, 2008 at 8:23:58 pm

Hi folks,

I am working on a Feature Length Documentary that is going to be delivered on film.

We are dealing with 3 different types of source material:

HDV - 1440x180 Shot at 24P (not advanced), laid to tape at 29.97
DV -720x480 Shot at 24P (not advanced), laid to tape at 29.97
DV - 720x480 Shot at 60i, laid to tape at 29.97

Currently, we are doing an Offline edit on a HDV timeline in FCStudio 2. (I know, I know, it's not ideal to edit in HDV... it wasn't my decision...)

In order to go to our film out/DI, I need to do an Online/up-convert all of our material to 1920x1080 HD @ 24P.

So, I need to A) upres everything to HD and B) convert everything to 24P (or 23.98) and then be sure that it all syncs back up to FCP.

A few questions:

1) Has anyone here done something similar before in terms of upres-ing? Can you give me some direction on how to get the best quality result? (My research suggests that I should recapture everything using FCP ProRes HQ codec. And from there convert my material to 24P. Thoughts???)
2) Has anyone dealt with and offline/online with HDV and the new FCP 6. I know that the ProRes Capture seems to be a bit dodgy. (Note that I'm planning to recapture the original footage using a Kona card to ge to ProResHQ.)
3) Once I upres the material, I'm not clear on the best method to reverse telecine the material originally shot at 24P. (It's now at 29.97 and I need to remove the 3:2 pulldown.) Is Compressor a good solution? Cinema Tools? Should I look at purchasing something else?
4) Any recommendations on converting the 60i DV material to 24P? Some tests I've looked at suggest that Magic Bullet's Suite is the best commercially available software for doing this. Does any have experience or suggestions with this?

If you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Morgan Drmaj
