FCP quit unexpectedly...won't open project

I cannot open a project I worked on yesterday. Every time I try to open it, it gets to about 30% in it's process of reading the project and then get the error: The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly. - close, report, reopen. Is there any way I can open this file? And if not, how can I avoid this happening in the future??
