thanks for your advice. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that it would have been better to have created the project backup via Media Manager instead of copying the files to the external drive via Finder.
As the original copy took most of the day, I would like to avoid re-doing this if I can. I guess I can just replace the problem clips as I have the masters (and other parts of the clips exist without any problems elsewhere in the timeline!). But I'd love to know what caused FCP to decide that some clips from the same master file could reconnect while others could not!
