Unusual Audio Distortion

I am experiencing an audio distortion problem with FCP 5.0.4 using an iMAC. There is no problem when using the "built-in" audio, only when using my FIREPOD firewire interface.
Audio crackles badly, similar to a problem with incompatible frequencies but this is not the problem as the captured sound is 16 bit, 48khz and the project and sequence settings are also set there. The distortion occurs in the Viewer and TImeline. The only time there is no distortion is when I unlink the audio from a clip and play it alone in the viewer - whenever audio is connected to video the distortion occurs.
I have reinstalled FCP 5 and the problem continues. The Firepod works fine with other applications including Soundtrack Pro, QT, Cubase, iTunes and iMovie.
I would really appreciate any insights.
