FCP can't see DSR-11 deck -- why not?

I have some footage shot on full sized DVCAM and my regular deck only plays the mini-dv flavor. So I borrowed my neighbor's DSR-11 deck. It plays the tape, I can monitor it with an S-cable hookup, but FCP is not seeing the deck. I plugged the same deck into my old PC to see if I could see it there in Premiere Pro, no dice.

Does this suggest a bad firewire out? Or... I know the firewire cable is working okay. Any suggestions of what I might be doing wrong? Got the easy setup for DV NTSC.
