Suddenly...RENDER FILES

This has been a recurring issue lately. I'm editing a project and everythng's fine. Then I open a new project, do a simple import. or task, and WHAM--green and orange lines appear EVERYWHERE in the timeline. Sometimes a Command-Z will set me free, other times I have to go back to a previous autosave. ANY IDEAS? FCP 6 G5 dual 2.3, 4gb memory
