Exporting Quicktime Reference Files

Hi all!
I searched the posts for an answer, but was not able to find one (I found a lot of similar questions though). I need to export a Quicktime reference from FCP 5.03, and when I try (un-check "make movie self contained) the export seems to take as long as an embeded quicktime. I read that the export settings need to match the sequence excactly, could this be the problem (I am trying to export a 320x240 quicktime)?
Any help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks!
Dave
