Video Capture Final Cut

Im currently capturing hi8 and Digital8 on Final Cut Pro 7. Im using the ilink firewire connection. The VTR indicates it is OK. I'm also able to control the camera via the controls in Final Cut. As soon as capture is started, all I see is "locating timecode". No video ever shows up.
If I switch to non-controllable device, I am able to capture but the sound always ends up being out of sync. Is there a way to remedy this?
It work's seamlessly with the Mini-DV camera (locates timecode) so I'm confused as to why it's not working with any of the hi8 or Digital8's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
