Slow render with G-Drive

Hi
I've recently purchased a G-Drive 750GB Drive which I have connected to my Macbook Pro via FW800.
I'm working on an edit that requires an hour long sequence with Timecode in vision.
My previous drives were Lacie D2's (also via FW 800) and I've never had to wait literally hours for something like this to render!
All the blurb suggested the G-Drive (at 7200 rpm) was perfect for Video work but I'm not finding that difficult to believe.
Anyone else experienced similar?
Many thanks.
