Experimenting is never ridiculous. Is the way to learn. many people is scare to change any setting. They are afraid of their Mac blowing up.

" so far, edited DV PAL (720x576). I am trying to convert it to H264
quicktime - 1280x1024. I know it sounds like a ridiculous thing to do "
Christian,
The problem I see is that your 1280x1024 frame, is not 4x3, neither 16x9.
You will need to crop some stuff if you don't want your PAL movie to get distorted.
Open a new sequence (DV PAL).
- Change the size to 1280x1024.
- Change the Pixels to Square.
- Change the Field Order to NONE.
Drop your DV footage on it and apply it a De-interlacing filter.
