Well you don't have to have a transition selected. Just the end of a clip or a cut. Use the G tool to grab a group of them and extend them all to the same point for example. Used in combination with snapping and it's extremely effective. It can also duplicate the function of the roll tool. For example, highlight the cut point and you can extend it with the extend edit function instead of switching to the roll tool. And no, I don't think it utilizes the autoselect tools in any way.
